Where We Work

Mr. Bainum’s business success rooted him and his family in the Washington, D.C., area. While the pressing needs of Wards 7 and 8 keep the Foundation’s work concentrated here, we still maintain a broader commitment to other communities, both domestically and internationally.

Food insecurity. Low birth weight. Lack of health care. Housing and job instability. The problems of extreme poverty are not unique to D.C.’s Wards 7 and 8. Through our efforts here, we will be able to develop a success model we can take elsewhere.

The Virginia-based Bainum Foundation Farm, located just outside the District of Columbia, also serves the children and families of Wards 7 and 8 while striving to improve the overall food system in the District.

We believe every community has unique strengths, needs and priorities, so we dig deep to know and understand the communities we serve. And no matter where we work, our ultimate aim is to build ladders of opportunity that will benefit children and families in poverty. We envision a world where every child, regardless of the color of his or her skin or the address on the family’s mailbox, has the chance to realize his or her full potential.
