The Bainum Family Foundation has four major focus areas: our work to improve early childhood in the District of Columbia, with a focus on infants and toddlers and their families in Wards 7 and 8; the Bainum Foundation Farm, which will address food access and quality issues in these same low-income neighborhoods in D.C.; our work to support and enhance Seventh-day Adventist education as part of the legacy of our founder, Stewart Bainum; and, perhaps lesser known, what we refer to as family philanthropy, which includes the ongoing philanthropic efforts of four generations of the Bainum family.

An article recently published on the blog of the National Center for Family Philanthropy (“How Do Family Foundations Partner with Community Foundations?”) describes how three family foundations ― including ours ― work with community foundations to advance their respective missions. The article explains how our valued partnership with the Community Foundation of the National Capital Region, through the use of donor-advised funds, supports not only the philanthropic work of the Bainum family, but also the charitable efforts of our own Board of Directors and Foundation staff, giving us flexible and engaging ways to help everyone give back.
