Returning to Service, Reconnecting with Community: Bainum Family Foundation Service Day at Martha’s Table
October 12, 2026
On September 15, our Bainum Family Foundation team had the opportunity to celebrate a return to our annual Service Day — an occasion interrupted by COVID and sorely missed by our staff. We were lucky enough to re-start this tradition by serving at Martha’s Table’s community market at its headquarters in Southeast Washington, D.C. This beautiful space makes what could feel like an anonymous food distribution process instead feel like a celebration of community.
One moment in particular captured this uplifting spirit: time and again, community members would ask that part of their allotted market portion be shared with the person behind them in line. Even in a market designed to serve communities that too often experience limited access to healthy, affordable food, neighbors were looking out for one another. It was a powerful reminder that community well-being is not simply dependent on assets and resources. It is equally reliant on the people in the community: their willingness to understand and respond to others’ needs, build meaningful relationships, and work together so all can thrive. This focus on listening and responding directly to community members is one that resonates deeply with our team. It also reminded us that the systems change we seek to advance is built through exactly what we saw on Service Day: consistent, day-to-day acts of connection, co-creation, and service.
Meeting Families Where They Are
There was no better place than Martha’s Table for our team to see these values in action. Since 1980, the organization has supported strong children, families, and communities through programs focused on education, health and wellness, family support, and community investment. Its approach recognizes that children thrive when families thrive and that lasting change requires addressing multiple dimensions of well-being across generations.
From early childhood education and healthy food access to family success services, workforce development, and community-led economic mobility initiatives, Martha’s Table invests in the wrap-around supports that allow families to flourish, an approach that resonates deeply with Bainum’s history and mission. Through it all, the organization centers the strengths, aspirations, and leadership of community members themselves. The market we supported during Service Day is just one entry point into a broader network of services designed to improve health outcomes, expand educational opportunities, strengthen family well-being, and build thriving communities.
As we reflect on the day, our Bainum team is reminded that our responsibility as a philanthropic organization extends beyond funding. It includes showing up, building relationships, learning alongside our partners, and remaining accountable to the communities we serve.
Returning to Where it Began
This year’s Service Day carried special significance as it marked the Foundation’s first Service Day since the pandemic, allowing us to return to a tradition that has long helped shape our culture and strengthen connections between colleagues. Even more meaningful, it brought us back to the site of Bainum’s very first Service Day, organized in part by our beloved colleague Marcus Gray, who we lost in 2020. Returning to Martha’s Table allowed us to live out the inspiration Marcus left those who knew him: serving together and deepening our community and team connections were values he championed. His belief that lasting change begins with authentic human relationships continues to guide our work.
As the market wound down and we packed up for the afternoon, we left inspired not only by the impact of Martha’s Table’s programs, but by the generosity, resilience, and leadership of the community itself.
A Great Time to Give
We are grateful to the Martha’s Table staff, volunteers, and neighbors who welcomed us so warmly. Their work is a powerful reminder that addressing complex challenges requires partnership, trust, and a long-term commitment to supporting whole families and communities.
If you are inspired by their mission, there are many ways to get involved, especially as colder weather approaches and families face increasing financial pressures. Martha’s Table welcomes volunteers, donors, and community partners in all forms. Organizations can host student field trips, share professional expertise, support workforce development opportunities, or contribute resources that expand opportunities for children and families. Whether through service, advocacy, or financial support, every contribution helps strengthen the network of care that enables communities to thrive.
We are looking forward to our future work with Martha’s Table and are equally excited to carry forward the inspiration from our time with them into future Service Days.
