How We Work

The Bainum Family Foundation is a private operating foundation, which means we work closely with our partner communities and organizations to create lasting impact in our area of interest: Early Childhood.

Historically, philanthropy has often operated in ways that center funders over communities. We believe philanthropy serves communities best when it serves as a true partner — one that listens, collaborates, and supports. We call our approach co-creation. We follow the lead of our partner communities and organizations, coming alongside them to make change happen together.

We believe this approach embodies the principles of trust and collaboration, helping to rebalance traditional power dynamics and ensuring that resources are distributed equitably.

We also recognize that there are times when we can use our access, influence, and resources to advocate alongside our partners. In these moments, we do so with their guidance and consent — as allies, not decision-makers.

We do not accept unsolicited proposals or use a formal request-for-proposal (RFP) process. Instead, we engage directly with partner communities and organizations to identify new potential partners best suited to help us jointly achieve meaningful and lasting change.
