Tammy L. Mann, PhD, Joins Bainum Family Foundation Board of Directors
Bethesda, Maryland (February 15, 2018) — Tammy L. Mann, PhD, a nationally recognized expert in early childhood development, has joined the Bainum Family Foundation Board of Directors.
“We are thrilled to have Tammy on our Board of Directors,” said Barbara Bainum, Chair of the Board, CEO and President of the Bainum Family Foundation. “With 25 years of experience addressing the needs of children and families experiencing economic and social difficulties, she has a thorough understanding of the research-based best practices that promote healthy development and high-quality learning environments. Her vast knowledge and sincere passion for this work are invaluable to our staff, Board and — ultimately — the communities we serve.”
A practitioner at heart, Mann has had a long-standing interest in effectively translating research to practice. She is currently President and CEO for The Campagna Center, a nonprofit organization in Alexandria, Va., that equips children and families with a comprehensive set of tools they need to thrive and succeed. Previously, she served as Executive Director for the Frederick Patterson Research Institute and Deputy Executive Director for ZERO TO THREE.
Mann serves on a number of boards including the Foundation for Child Development, the Buffett Early Childhood Institute and the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce. She was also recently reappointed by the Alexandria City Council to serve as a Commissioner on the Children Youth and Families Collaborative Commission. She served a four-year term on the Governing Board of the National Association for the Education of Young Children beginning in 2012. In 2016, she was appointed President of the NAEYC Governing Board for a two-year term.
Mann holds both a PhD and MA in Clinical Psychology, with an Interdisciplinary Specialization in Infant Studies, from Michigan State University. She has held adjunct and affiliate appointments at Howard University and George Mason University, respectively.
The Foundation — now in its 50th year of operation — works in three areas (Early Learning, Wrap-Around Support and Knowledge Building) to improve the quality and availability of resources for children living in poverty. Its collaborative approach combines proven expertise with a passion for supporting the whole child by providing integrated services to help them thrive.
Current Foundation initiatives include:
- Improving early childhood in the District of Columbia’s Wards 7 and 8, with a focus on high-quality early learning and school mental health
- Enhancing food access and quality in these same neighborhoods, while also working to strengthen the overall D.C. food system
- Advancing Seventh-day Adventist education to honor the founders’ commitment to faith-based education
- Supporting the ongoing philanthropic efforts of four generations of the Bainum family
