Joan Lombardi, PhD, Joins Bainum Family Foundation Board of Directors
Bethesda, Maryland (August 23, 2016) — Joan Lombardi, PhD, an internationally recognized expert on child and family policy, has joined the Bainum Family Foundation Board of Directors.
“We are thrilled to have Joan serve on our Board of Directors,” said Barbara Bainum, Chair of the Board, CEO and President of the Bainum Family Foundation. “Her deep expertise in child development and her wealth of local, national and international policy experience will be of tremendous value as we implement our new strategic direction, with its emphasis on early learning and improving the systems that serve young children and their families.”
The Foundation has made a five-year, $10 million commitment to improve early childhood in the District of Columbia, and also makes education-focused investments in other underserved communities.
A resident of Washington, D.C., Lombardi currently directs Early Opportunities LLC, focusing on innovation, policy and philanthropy. Previously, she served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Early Childhood Development in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in the Obama Administration, and as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy and External Affairs in the Administration for Children and Families and the first commissioner of the Child Care Bureau during the Clinton Administration.
Lombardi holds a PhD in human development education from the University of Maryland, College Park, and has written and consulted extensively on child development and policy issues. Most recently, she authored August Highlights What’s At Stake for Families in November for the Huffington Post.
